Agapanthus praecox

Blue lily, African lily, Lily of the Nile
A species native to southern Africa, it is used as an ornamental
practically all over the world. They are vigorous-growing perennials,
highly valued for their lush foliage and showy deep blue flowers.

It is a herbaceous perennial, rhizomatous plant that produces a bunch of
basal leaves up to 60 cm long and 5-7 cm wide, ribbon-shaped,
canaliculate, arched, pointed, smooth or sparsely puberulent.
It has
blue flowers, grouped in large umbels that can have up to more than 100
flowers each, supported by a flowering stem up to more than 1 m long.
Each flower has a calyx about 15-20 mm long, and a narrow funnel-shaped
corolla up to 5 cm in diameter, white with red apex, with a 4-6 cm long,
yellow labellum with red stripes, and tiny lateral staminodes.
The
fruits are globose black capsules about 2 cm in diameter.
Flowering
occurs mainly in the spring and summer months. It reproduces by seeds
and by division of the rhizome.
